Springtime in our garden

My garden is amazing. We probably have a garden that is about ten times the size of our house footprint. Daffodils are everywhere, I probably have seven varieties Tiny house, big garden. That’s how I like it. The magnolia recovered well from much needed pruning We’ve lived here for more than a year now, andContinueContinue reading “Springtime in our garden”

We made it to one

Yesterday’s goal was to make it to the Munich botanical gardens. We utterly failed, due to sickness in the family. Today, we had a bit of a second chance, as the relative’s health improved dramatically. Could we. Mayve today? We utterly failed again. We did, however, go to the Freising botanical gardens, and they areContinueContinue reading “We made it to one”

This year is so slow…

It’s a crazy year. Well all years since I’ve moved to Germany in November 2019 have been pretty crazy, but for different reasons. This year is just, I don’t know, slow? It’s mid May, and I think we can count on one hand the number of fully sunny days we’ve had this spring. It hasContinueContinue reading “This year is so slow…”

A dream come true

Jot down the first thing that comes to your mind. I discovered today that my new garden houses a thriving population of sand lizards (Lacerta agilis). This means nothing to no one. But for me, this has always been a childhood dream. A garden with a sunny terrace, where lizards would be crawling all over.ContinueContinue reading “A dream come true”

Now this is something different…

You all now by now I’m a bit of a reptile nerd. I can’t help it. It’s been like that since forever. It started with dinosaurs when I was young, and it never left me. Those of you that now me a little better, or read here regularly, will also understand that snakes in particularContinueContinue reading “Now this is something different…”

Spring has not arrived here yet

The sun had me fooled today. It looked like it was going to be a semi-cloudy day, meaning that there would at least be some sun around. That was true for sure, so we tried to go out as quickly as possible this morning, to grab a coffee in the sun somewhere in the cityContinueContinue reading “Spring has not arrived here yet”

Botanist paradise

For a while I have been wanting to visit the Garchinger Heide, a small nature reserve located about 15 kilometres away from here (Freising). I had read some flyers in the ‘Landratsamt’ last year, when I was there to register our car. The flyers had some colorful flower pictures on it. When I tried toContinueContinue reading “Botanist paradise”

All the lovely stupid flowers (part 3)

There’s a lot going on at the moment in the flowering world. Because I took myself a nice long Easter break, me and the family have explored several new areas that are close to home and also span a nice range of habitats. It is interesting to observe the range of specialization occurring in plants.ContinueContinue reading “All the lovely stupid flowers (part 3)”

It’s not pretty

Times have changed. A lot. When I was a young boy, we used to have a small and not too special garden, located in a small town in the East of The Netherlands. (Some readers may think ‘argh shut up Robin, you’re still a fucking child’ and although that may have some truth to it,ContinueContinue reading “It’s not pretty”

Being outdoors is not what it used to be…

You know that feeling when you have been outside in the cold all day, and you come inside and struggle to keep your eyes open? That’s how I feel right now! The Kratzmühle Badesee is always a nice place to have a short break. Makes for excellent swimming in summer, too! And look at thatContinueContinue reading “Being outdoors is not what it used to be…”
