Being outdoors is not what it used to be…

You know that feeling when you have been outside in the cold all day, and you come inside and struggle to keep your eyes open? That’s how I feel right now!

The Kratzmühle Badesee is always a nice place to have a short break. Makes for excellent swimming in summer, too! And look at that weather, eh? Can’t stay inside with blue skies like that!

We were ‘hiking’ in the Altmühltal today. Well, we spent the first two hours covering one and a half kilometre, that is the time it takes Rafa to walk that distance. It includes all distractions. Each ‘stone’, ‘man’, ‘car’ – to name a few – that we encounter have to be named and stared at for some time. This is reality when you become a parent, no matter how outdoorsy you were before. We have tried  backpacks and bring a stroller. Mostly nope! Rafa, too, is a hiker and wants to walk until he is too exhausted*. Then he gets tucked into the stroller sleeping bag and takes some shut-eye. That’s when mom and dad pick up speed and try their best to bag some kilometres in the next two hours. The 20 kilometre hikes are over.

It is something I had never considered before becoming a parent. You’re guiding a little human that also has preferences and opinions.

Our strolls are probably an insult to hiking**, but nevertheless very rewarding.
——————————————————————————————————————*Today he also didn’t mind being carried around like a bag of potatoes, which I probably did for a kilometre or two.
** Still, 12.000-ish steps. Almost a real hike. I call that a win!
