The to-do list

Three days! That’s the amount of time I spent ‘out of office’ last week. Still working, albeit from a mobile office on location. I reviewed some papers, worked on conceptual figures for a paper I’m a part of, and even looked at some data. It was, however, also working remotely, with limited (mobile) internet access.Continue reading “The to-do list”

Dark, red and white.

I just drove the entire stretch from the Netherlands to Freising. About 700 kilometers. Eight hours, including three stops, and that with two young kids. A long stretch of darkness with red and white lights gliding in each direction. These are decent statistics. I’m glad to be home and will write something more interesting anotherContinue reading “Dark, red and white.”

Mixed emotions

This already will be our last night in the Netherlands, before we return to our home in Bavaria after a week spent with family and friends. I’m excited to go back, but sad to leave at the same time. Excited, as my team has taken great care of our running light pollution experiment, and I’mContinue reading “Mixed emotions”

Everything is better when shared

This sounds a bit silly, perhaps, but I was really looking forward to spending some time alone. Since the pandemic – which also more or less coincided with becoming parents (twice) – I have not spent any evening alone. Every day is quite similar. I get home, one of us cooks dinner while the otherContinue reading “Everything is better when shared”

She recognized me!

When I still lived in Wageningen in the Netherlands, me and several colleagues were regulars in the local campus coffee place. We were always having friendly conversation with the owner, until at one point we pretty much all left within a rather short time frame. Obviously, I had not been there since I moved away,Continue reading “She recognized me!”

Home Sweet Home

This evening is the first time I have been all alone for a very long time. Over the past 2.5 years, I have hardly ever spent a real moment without kids or without Heike. I have only once been away overnight during my son’s life – when I had an interview for my current job.Continue reading “Home Sweet Home”

The good news that everyone has been waiting for…

My home country of the Netherlands just announced this evening that it will lift pretty much all restrictions in place to keep people safe during a pandemic. They decided to do this during times where per capita case numbers are not just high, but soaring high above pretty much all other countries in the world.Continue reading “The good news that everyone has been waiting for…”

The hill

“Would you like to meet up this evening?” he asked me. “I want to show you the holiday pictures and my new car.” “Sure,” I answered, “if you do an antigen self test beforehand. I’d love to meet. It’s been a while.” “But I just returned from holiday on Friday,” he said, “and I alreadyContinue reading “The hill”

Boiling point

After a solid four hours of driving on a mostly empty highway, we spent last night with the camper parked in a forest parking lot close to Wiesbaden. The drive was a breeze. The kids were completely out for most of the ride. The night was quiet and my sleep was dreamless and mostly uninterrupted.Continue reading “Boiling point”

Embrace kindergarten level

I had an interesting conversation this afternoon about how it sometimes feels like you’re writing an absolute abomination of a scientific paper, especially after you’ve been at it for a while. This is often how things develop in your head when you work on them a lot, and especially if you think about processes longContinue reading “Embrace kindergarten level”
