I never found out whether Hanna got full tenure…

There was no escaping it on Twitter in the past couple of days. As I was mostly out on a camping trip over the weekend, I missed most of the buzz. Even today, however, it took me only a minute or so of mindless scrolling to find out the latest trend on academic Twitter; #Ichbinhanna.Continue reading “I never found out whether Hanna got full tenure…”

Stop thinking, start writing

Prologue One should not have Zoom meetings all day. Geez, that messes up your head. I have been staring at a screen since 8AM this morning, and only briefly stopped to grab a bite and bring my son to bed after lunch. I have been outside (at 5.30PM) to water my tomatoes. That’s when youContinue reading “Stop thinking, start writing”

Every review these days

I have now reviewed “A fantastic manuscript that contains A LOT of new data and is in pretty decent shape for a first submission” by Author et al. and have read it with great interest. The design is novel and the concept is interesting. However, I do have some major comments, followed by some specificContinue reading “Every review these days”

The knowledge drain?

After months of thinking about it, followed by weeks of trying to find time, due to various pressing deadlines haunting me, I have now officially started writing my first grant proposal where my role is as the main PI. Perhaps subconsciously the act of my boss verifying with me yesterday – in my annual evaluationContinue reading “The knowledge drain?”

This year’s a little different

I had my annual evaluation meeting this morning. I hate these meetings. My first one – years ago – was a 3.5 hour rant by my superior, telling me how I lacked the knowledge to fulfill the job description. They could have delivered this message in two minutes. It created another huge dent in theContinue reading “This year’s a little different”

Weekly patterns

Even though my weeks are rather unpredictable in terms of how other people hijack my schedule, there are still very predictable trends in how I feel or perceive the day every day of the week. My emotional or psychological state of being seems to closely follow the day of the week. I thought it wouldContinue reading “Weekly patterns”

Non-reviews

I reviewed a paper the other day. For quite a reputable journal, I might add. Not some predatory rubbhish. It was quite a nice piece, too. This paper had a very decent introduction, results were quite well-presented (and certainly convincing). However, the methodology lacked some specificity, and I could certainly not reproduce their statistical models.Continue reading “Non-reviews”

A dark place

Since a couple of years, I have gotten quite interested in the effects of artificial light at night, especially on plant-mediated interactions. This interest was mostly sparked by many kitchen table conversations with my friend and former house mate Davide, who has studied effects of light at night on bird behaviour for many years. ItContinue reading “A dark place”

Camping in The Jena Experiment

This morning I packed my Tansy plants in a rental trailer, loaded up the Nugg with food, clothes and family, and drove off to Jena. As the rental trailer limited our speed to 80 kmh, we took about four and a half hours to reach or destination – The Jena Experiment – where our newContinue reading “Camping in The Jena Experiment”
