My new weekly schedule

I’ve run out of topics lately, and it annoys the shit out of me because I am completely overthinking it.

The way I always worked until now is that I just started up WordPress every day, took the first thing that came to mind, and wrote about that. It was a simple process.

Lately, I open WordPress and stare at the screen for a couple of minutes. Then I close it. I look on Twitter. I close that as well. I open the WordPress reader. Meh. I close that. Until I finally hit the ‘New blog post’ button.

For one and a half year I just wrote whatever came to mind, and was fine with it.

Now I’m struggling to find subjects…

Or well…

It’s not subjects per se either. I can always write something. It just might be incredibly boring for most. I think I don’t want the topic to be kids or camping all the time, but especially the former takes up a lot of my free time. Maybe I don’t experience stuff to write about anymore.

Am I becoming boring?

Meh. Maybe I already was boring all this time (sorry to bother you then).

Now, I think I’ve coined this idea before, but I’m seriously considering a daily theme to write posts about. This reduces the risk of writing only about certain subjects, and more importantly, the risk of forgetting others that could make interesting writing.

I’ve thought about a list many times – I just never started doing it.

Below is a potential list of themes that I could see myself write about regularly. Let me know what you think of it in the comments below, on Twitter, or anywhere else you may find me.

Monday meltdown – because some things just bother me. And who doesn’t love a good old rant? Writing is a great way to get rid of frustration, so best to start the week by writing off everything that’s nasty. Could be the German system, could be academia, could be you? But yes, it even could be me. Sometimes I’m the one that bothers me most.

True Tuesday – based on a true story. Some people told me that they appreciated some of my more recent posts that were describing scenarios from the past. I think a weekly write-up based on a true story could push me to focus on the craft of fiction writing and storytelling. I enjoy writing this sort of stuff – and I’ve experienced too many weird things not to write them down.

Wrestling Wednesday – because I struggle a lot in life. Wednesdays used to be the days I sparred with my therapist so I could keep the demons in check. We’re increasing the number of weeks between sessions. Neither of us think I’m completely fixed, but we’re running out of funding. I might as well ramble here. Sometimes other people’s experiences can be helpful therapy, so perhaps my experiences can help others. And writing is definitely therapeutic for me, so it’s a win-win.

Thursday tadaaa – I guess you’ll find out on Thursday. Suggestions are always welcome. Or it may be about snakes. Or plants. Or snakes and plants. Or something else? Tell me.

Friday findings – about all that I discovered this week. As an ecologist, I’m working on various cool subjects involving plants, insects and other organisms. I may not discover completely new things every week (I’m an ecologist, not a fucking wizard), but with the team, I think we have something fun and interesting to share with the world every week. What better way to close the work week than to write it off?

Surprise Saturday – where the fuck will he be this weekend? I’m making a habit of escaping the house for the weekend lately. I don’t know where I’ll be. I might be somewhere fun. Who knows. It’s a surprise.

Sunday shorts – for posts without too many words. Or without content. Give me a break, eh? I mean, wasn’t Sunday meant to rest anyway…

Alright. I’ll give this schedule a try for the next couple of weeks. What do you think? If your favorite subject is missing, let me know what it is and I’ll consider revisions!

I like the snakes and plants topic, but also appreciate the posts you share your feelings/rants/experiences of the past.
