This evening, we arrived in the Czech republic, only about five kilometers across the border north of Passau, where we have camped various times in the Bavarian forest on the German side. This time we are staying here in an Airbnb for a family get-together. Heike found a beautiful cottage in the middle of nowhere,Continue reading “Nice”

Sort of home
After four intense days, this week’s chemodiversity consortium meeting came to an end. I’m only unofficially part of this nice group of people, by serving as the daily supervisor for one of the ten subprojects. It somehow feels a bit like I’m an imposter in this group that got ‘in’ the easy way, without havingContinue reading “Sort of home”
0.5% better
“Ist mir egal,” I answered to the question whether we should continue the meeting in German or English. It just slipped out, without a thought. What a bloody dumb thing to do, eh? To be fair, me and another fellow Dutchie started to continue the conversation in Dutch, but it didn’t work out. We’re onContinue reading “0.5% better”
Stay awake
What a night. I’m staying in a hotel this week, to attend a consortium meeting. I figured it would be great to sleep in a hotel. Alone. It would probably be the best way to catch up on some much needed sleep. I already felt yesterday evening that it wasn’t going to happen. My bodyContinue reading “Stay awake”
Barely worth posting
I just arrived at my hotel after a good first consortium afternoon filled with fun talks, which was followed by a tour of the iDiv, and a good dinner that still has me feeling stuffed two hours after. I was already in my room. Even in my bed. Ready for sleep. Eyes closed. Go…. butContinue reading “Barely worth posting”
It would make great television
Tomorrow morning I will pick up a colleague, and together we’ll drive to Leipzig to attend the annual meeting of the German DFG chemodiversity consortium. I’m really looking forward to it. In fact, I was looking forward to this meeting so much that I shifted my parental leave plans to two weeks later than originallyContinue reading “It would make great television”
Bad day
I don’t know what is/was wrong with me today, but nothing feels right. I woke up feeling absolutely drained. My energy levels were low, and I was cranky, and that feeling only got worse as the day continued. I couldn’t help it, but I felt annoyed by everyone and everything today. I was snarky towardsContinue reading “Bad day”
Story. Story. Story?
When you’re writing a scientific paper, what’s on your mind? What are you thinking of? What are the aims? I find myself in a shift of attitude when it comes to writing. When I wrote my first paper(s), I had no clue what I was doing. I was summarizing everything I did, and not necessarilyContinue reading “Story. Story. Story?”
Hard work
It was a long day today. We made great progress on the harvest of our light pollution experiment. All aboveground biomass is now harvested, and scans of leaves were made for specific leaf area measurements. We got about two-thirds through the root washing for the belowground harvest. It was a tough day, but all inContinue reading “Hard work”
Last week in office
This week will kind of be my last week in office, and I will not be around for awhile after. Next week I have an annual consortium meeting of the DFG FOR3000 Chemodiversity Research Unit that I have been involved in over the past two years. For the first time since a very long time,Continue reading “Last week in office”
