When I still lived in Wageningen in the Netherlands, me and several colleagues were regulars in the local campus coffee place. We were always having friendly conversation with the owner, until at one point we pretty much all left within a rather short time frame. Obviously, I had not been there since I moved away, but today I had lunch there with one of my former supervisors and dear friend Jeff. You’d think that new customers replace the old ones in coffee places, and you will soon be erased from the ranks of best customers, and then from memory. The place was pretty full anyway, so I didn’t make an effort to have a chat, and we ordered our meals at one of the new young ladies that work there now (maybe she isn’t new at all – but whatever). I was quite surprised when after about fifteen minutes the owner came to chat at our table, and asked me how I was doing in Munich. Isn’t it great if the local coffee shop owner recognizes you after such a long time? She even remembered details and all. That’s dedication. I love that! Maybe I drank too much coffee. No, not maybe. I most definitely drank too much coffee. That part of me hasn’t changed, so I guess I’ll have to go back tomorrow!
She recognized me!
